Butterfly Mosaic Stepping Stones January 26, 2009

Thanks to a generous grant from the La Jolla Village Garden Club, which paid for mosaic materials, Ms. Lim’s fifth graders and Mrs. Rothschild’s first graders worked together to create cement mosaic butterfly stepping stones for the butterfly garden.

Before beginning the project, the students talked about how the butterflies could not feature random patterns, as real butterflies are symmetrical. Then two sets of buddy pairs got to work making each stone. Students created ten stepping stones in all, which will be placed in the garden. The students had to work fast to create a pattern and set it in the cement before it dried, and the results are beautiful, creative and show incredible team work!
